Independent
schools in Malta form part of the smallest yet perhaps one
of the most vibrant sectors of the Maltese educational field.
Survival, success and sustainability in the independent sector
depend on the forward looking practices and the serious, well
researched hard work that goes into modern school management.
Not all independent schools are new. Some date back to the
early 1900s and are proud of a long tradition in education
having strong links with Colonial Malta. Others have stemmed
from a very innovative and successful idea of a Parents' Foundation
- a non-profit making organisation. A few emanated from the
energies and vision of Maltese educators and their families
who have continued their sterling work throughout the years.
This diversity has sparked off a healthy exchange of ideas
and practises, which has helped to give the Maltese Educational
System a multi faceted flavour.
One
of the cornerstones upon which most of these schools have
been built is the holistic approach to education. In most
cases, this has featured as the central theme. Pupils, teachers,
parents, administrators as well as consultative and other
local agencies strive together to develop meaningful, valid
and effective policies and practises that Maltese students
deserve. This of course, under the auspices of the Ministry
of Education! The key principles laid down by the new national
minimum curriculum are embedded into the programmes of study
followed by the pupils in Independent Schools.
It
is therefore not surprising that an Independent School was
among the very first group of Maltese Schools to find its
way into a Comenius Action 1 Programme - although the road
has been bumpy at times - the paper work daunting - it has
proved to be a wonderful experience for all involved. Perhaps
the best lesson learnt - don't be afraid to open up and share.
Joining
and sharing for better learning - that's the Independent Schools'
statement.
